Recently there have been increasing claims that former President Trump has been sent by God, and he has been compared to Jesus Christ. Does this reflect a new dimension in American politics, in which divine intervention will overwhelm the petty machinations of humankind?
No. Donald Trump is not the Messiah, whatever illusions some of his fervent acolytes may harbor. While God may work in mysterious ways, it is blasphemy to imagine that the Almighty would employ such a morally bankrupt narcissist as his emissary on earth.
In perspective, searching for historical precedents doesn’t turn up much. After Abraham Lincoln’s martyrdom there were some talk of his Christ-like qualities, but Lincoln himself never indulged such fancies. On the other side, some southerners after the Civil War extolled Robert E. Lee as “God-like in beauty, power, and grace.” But Lee himself had no part in it.
On the other hand, the Trump campaign itself has released a video proclaiming that “God Made Trump.” No subtlety here; it begins with Trump’s June 14,1946, birthdate, laying the groundwork for a second Christmas. In this telling, God was incredibly foresightful, knowing that seven or eight decades later his “planned paradise” (that is, the United States) would need Trump to save it from Marxists and the Deep State.
The Trump campaign has also circulated a sketch of Donald sitting next to Jesus, partners in the heavenly enterprise. But don’t get the wrong idea: there is another Trump video online in which he acknowledges that Jesus Christ is more famous than himself. Who would have thought he was capable of such modesty?
Trump rallies have turned into tent revival meetings. Toward the end of each revival, the music turns somber and reverent, Trump speaks in more hushed and solemn tones, and the worshippers bow their heads, close their eyes, and raise their hands in prayer.
Those who wish may purchase a Trump Bible for $60. It includes a copy of the constitution, which Trump really should read. It’s already clear that although he claims that the Bible is his favorite book, he’s not very familiar with it. But then again, who would expect a Messiah to be tied to past scriptures. He will produce his own.
The prosecution of Trump in four criminal trials is, for his apostles, merely another proof of his favor with the Lord. In the words of Marjorie Taylor Greene. Jesus and Trump were both arrested by “radical corrupt governments.” The word “crucifixion” crops up in descriptions of what the martyred Trump is undergoing. The fact that he has so far defeated all the skeptics is only proof of divine intervention, of the fact that he is indeed the Chosen of God.
Of course we should keep an open mind. Let’s suppose for a moment that God did send us Trump. What should we conclude from that?
Maybe that God has a strange sense of humor?
Parallels with Rev. Jones and his Kool-Ade followers!
Right on target…but scarey
