Alan, Good to see you are active. However, I have to disagree with the thrust of your comment. While historically, the US has waxed and waned in dealing with immigrants, the last 50 years have witnessed an enormous upsurge in the foreign-born population from about 10 million in 1970 to over 40 million in 2013, with a substantial shift in the composition of immigrants with a much smaller share from Europe and a much larger share from poor countries. Overall, the US has absorbed these immigrants pretty well. Bob Lerman

Bob, Basically I agree. The intent of the column was to show that hate groups are nothing new. On immigration, certainly our record is indeed much better since the national origins policy was terminated in 1965. Over the last four years there was considerable regression regarding admission of refugees, but this will no doubt be reversed. Thanks for your interest and response, Alan
